hi there

i am new to canberra from UK. could not carry most of my gear over

anyone know where i can get some cheap second hand gear? Like waterproof trousers, crampon compatible boots, down jackets etc?

also what is the best way to get some walking done around the mountains here? independently or with a guide or with clubs etc?

Welcome to the forum, and to Australia.
Keep an eye on this topic - post is affordable.

Out of curiosity, what are you looking to do that involves crampons?
Cheers.

Hi, Welcome to Canberra.

Guided tours aren't big in ACT but there is a lot of walking to be done. One of the local bushwalking clubs would be a good place to start if you are new to the area. Lots of scrub to get lost in.

I don't know of any second hand gear shops for bushwalking gear. There is a store called Second Wind in Fyshwick which might have something. You might have better luck buying stuff off this forum or somewhere online.

Hi Avi,

Welcome to Bushwalk Australia and Canberra, Canberra is a great location for bushwalking, most of the ACT is National Park which has some very good bushwalking but as abceight has pointed out it has some very scrubby and tough walking in places so some caution is required, we are also close the very large Kosciuszko National Park to the south and Morton National Park toward the Coast and a few hours drive to our north there is the spectacular Blue Mountains National Park. You can walk from just south of Canberra all the way to just north of Melbourne all in National Parks.

There are several Bushwalking clubs in Canberra , the Canberra Bushwalking Club and the Family Bushwalkers, ANU Mountaineering Club, and the National Parks Association ACT, there are also walking for pleasure groups.

I am not sure if Second Wind Shop exists anymore but from time to time the bushwalking clubs do have adds for second hand gear, other than that as Tasadam has pointed out the for sale sub forum has some good deals.

The odds of finding a second hand boot in size x in Canberra are... well. Try Melbourne.

Hi Avi,

As far as I know the ANU Mountaineering Club is the only club in Canberra that does some mountaineering, I know they have a quite a few members that do serious mountain climbing, the other clubs are bushwalking or social walking clubs.
