Licola - Howitt - King Billies Rd

Postby CaptainC » Fri 23 Dec, 2011 12:39 pm

I drove up this road on 18 December and returned 21 December. There were some big roadworks on the Tamboritha Rd when I drove up, but they were gone when I returned so I think that they had finished. The guy at the roadworks told me that the road from Howitt to King Billy is open for the first time in 2 years, he worked on it so he should know. Also he warned me that there were a lot of big pot holes on the road to Howitt. A contractor had been hired to fix the road up before Christmas but had never started the job. I found that the road was OK to about the Moroka turnoff, but after that there were a lot of big potholes and I had to drive a lot slower than usual to see them and avoid them.

The gravel / rock is also quite loose on the Moroka Road - lots of potholes.

Agree the Howitt High Plains Rd is a pain in the bum with lots of deep potholes and you need to go very slow and careful when in a 2WD and killed the suspensions of my Outback (which were worn already).

Just got back from driving Howitt "Road". 30k of potholes big enough to kill your car if you're not very careful. It's in disgraceful condition.

They've finally fixed the MacAllister River crossing? YEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I know where I'm going this weekend! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thank you.
ps: It's bush road. If you can't cope with the gravel and a few potholes and corrugations, stay at home.

More than "a few" potholes. Probably 200 that you wouldn't want to drive over at anything faster than 10k. Of course no-ones going to complain about a pothole or two.

Right now, it's a track, not a road. And I've driven plenty of 4WD tracks in better knick that this supposed road.

I've just been on the road again, as far as the Guy's Hut car park. They have been working on it, you can see new metal and road work signs on the side of the road. They have got as far as the Snowy Plains airstrip (approx).

Try the Aberfeldy Road. That averages 200 potholes per kilometre.
In the good bits.

The road from Licola to the Mt Howitt carpark is satisfactory for 2 WD now.
