What is your GO TO Camping meal.

Thu 02 Feb, 2012 3:18 am

Ok it's the end of the day your TOTALLY STUFFED, you know if you don't eat something before bed you will regret it in the morning, so what do you eat, whats your GO TO meal you rely on.

You might not even have to heat water up and maybe you just don't feel like it as you are stuffed :)

Cheers.

My go to meal is Fantastic Noodles in the bowl, 85g, just add water and wait 2 or three minutes and your eating yummy noodles. I put the noodles in a zip lock to save some space.

Cheers.

Pasta. Cannot go past angel hair pasta with a couple of tomatoes, olives and parmesan stirred through.

First night is more often than not spaghetti bolognese, cooked a night or two before and then enough for one meal frozen in a small container so it will be okay until dinner time. Once the pasta's nearly cooked I throw it in the pot to heat it all up together. Usually include a bit of parmesan wrapped in tin foil/cling wrap and elastic band to make it gourmet!

2 minute noodles. the ones from the asian section. fast, easy, heaps of fuel. Bulk has made this meal less regular of late however...

lentils (protein and carbs). can be cooked with rice, with some coconut oil or some other form of fat to make it more filling

If on a 1-3 night trip, the first meal will be a frozen home made butter chicken, with rice and some papadams in a take away plastic container, epic!!!

Other than that any dehy vegetarian curry with rice, a chunky minestrone or spag bol worked nicely on my last tri.....or as nnw said chocolate is just fine

If the weathers mild a spread of whole smoked trout or tasmanian smoked salmon fillets with some bitey cheddar, capsicum dip and crackers or wraps for spoons. No need to pull out the camping stove or do any washing up.

If its cold either pasta with a tomato, chilli & chorizo ragu or risotto with porcini mushrooms & real butter, both with fistfuls of garlic, onion & parmesan and a dash of wine (... drink any leftovers with dinner!). You can get the best packets of dried ingredients for these meals that are perfectly portioned for camping from Italian supermarkets, no need to skimp on quality just because your in the bush.

If its its real hot then it gets complicated... haven't quite nailed cooking real meals with non-perishables yet.

2 min noodles from asian food section with the 5 little sachets of 'MSG' stuff. Plus dried mushrooms, green beans, corn, chili, capsicum, zuchini.
Boil it for, umm how long I can never be sure..?

Burn your lips and sear the skin out of your mouth, belch very nice I feel better now.
Glug glug glug from the little stash of single malt and the day is done.
Night all.

I well remember a TOTALLY STUFFED situation - wind++ & snow, not enough rests, quagmires at planned campsites so kept going, dark falling, me falling etc. No handy drinkable water, just what we still had with us. Put up tent, de-leeched, plopped into nice cosy warm bed, ate tomorrow's lunch (crackers, cheese, spreads, scroggin etc). Full & HAPPY. Enjoyed that night's dinner the next day as a spiffy lunch under better circumstances. :D

2 minute noodles (yes the asian ones - Mia Goreng with all the flavours etc added), some dehydrated beef mince (one packet from Backcountry or whatever it's called lasts me about a dozen packets of noodles), with some indonesian spice mix that adds a bit of green and red to mix so it looks like it has vegetables in it. I am a believer that greens are what you feed to real food like cows....

When in doubt 2 min noodles with cup a soup (Dutch Curry and Rice) easy cheap and quick, less than a 1/4 of your daily kj needs but you can double up to near 1/2,in a non cooking situation an All Natural Bakery Oat Slice bar1798kj 2 cheese triangles 380kj 1 striker salami stick 308kj in total about 1/3 of your daily need and makes a good walking lunch for me (carbs protein and fat) :)

My go to meal is a mixture of 3 things.

1 snickers bar. 55g ish.

1 small packet of chips 20g.

1 Packet of Noodles in a cup (beef or chicken) OR 2 minute noodles.

I eat the snickers bar and packet of chips while waiting for the noodles to cook.

It has 3000kj with plenty of carbs(noodles, chips, snickers) and protein (snickers) and replaces any salt I've lost.

It can be eaten as either lunch or dinner.

Wouldnt the snickers be best enjoyed after the Noodles as dessert?? Chips as entree, Noodles as main, Snickers as dessert??

2 -Minute noodles, can be eaten cold with water in a pinch, buy boil water add noodles and lots of butter and dinner is done.
I can eat and cook fancy at home, when I am out I have 2 considerations; energy and nutrient density and how much fuel I need to prepare the meal.
Everything else including palatability takes a back seat, I eat a lot of sardines on a long walk and make my own cram bars and hard biscuits.
Tinned tuna in olive oil figures heavily in my menus as does spam, instant mashed potatoes and, in winter, a lot of butter.
Coffee is a major food group so I also carry a lot of raw sugar and full-cream milk powder.
My "Go-To" breakfast has always been rolled oat porridge, raw and cold if need be and sometimes I have used that instant oats stuff

Corvus we used to often do the exact same thing. Single sachet of spam fried, mash and peas.

I just did a trial run the other day for my trip next week. One of Ainsle whatever his name is mushroom and leek rissotos. Topped with salmon sachet and parmesan. Was really good. I used my packafeather XL stove cranked right down and it simmered away happily taking 15 minutes on bugger all metho. I could also try using my cosy and leaving it to cook in some boiling water.

Spam, 50% fat and the other 50% stuff you wouldn't eat any other time.
The Plumrose 200 gram tin of shoulder ham is an acceptable substitute but a little too lean
I'm OK most other times of the year but when I hit the snowline my body craves fat, and for some reason chockolate doesn't cure the craving, the other handy source of fat is tinned Camembert cheese or I could go back to buying side bacon and cutting thick bacon steaks to take, in which case I need the Camembert tins to hold all that bacon fat.
If in a semi-fixed camp I like to make soup and I'll pack some small ziplock bags of pearl barley or lentils for that purpose, nothing beats hot home-made soup on a cold day, tomato and lentil or curried chicken and barley are my current favourites

Frigging awesome stuff:

Make sure it's Garlic! You won’t be able to stop eating it once you start! (Probably not health food!) :D

Smells so good that an unwanted visitor managed to pose in the photo! :?

I used to use these as well. They were great fried up with with Deb poatato, peas and a creamy mustard sauce over the top.
If I'm really stuffed at the end of a hard day though, I think a cup-a-soup thickened with some Deb and a sachet of Tuna added is a quick way to replace salts and protein. Looks like crap but is great comfort food.

Puns are great. I would even consider seeing a theatrical production based on puns. It would be a play on words.
