'FOUND'
Email me if you lost your camera on the Overland track in May.
Place, date, model etc. I carried it for 12 days and it is safely at my place now.

You may like to check this link http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8558&p=112803&hilit=found+camera#p112803 for another possible way to find the owner.
Also could be some clues on the images (if you can download them) to the ID or origin of the owner? Long shot, but not impossible.

I left a message with the Rangers at the Lake St Clair end of the walk. They have a lost and found book. I was surprised that the owner had not checked with them. You are right about handing in to the police, they have a concept of 'theft by finding'. I was in a mad helter skelter to make my flight in Hobart.
