Could someone who recently did the track tell me about heater status in all the huts?
Just copy/paste this and add:

If you can guess how many people they sleep, add a number before the brackets.

Yeah I forgot about that. I'd have hoped it had been replaced by now, but no idea.

There was heater in Scott Kilvert as of 16 May.

Although, in current weather conditions, finding dry kindling to get started is a difficult proposition - I would suggest a liberal supply of fire-starters !

Cotton wool rubbed with vaseline is perfect, and lightweight.

Lol yes! Last time I was at Scott Kilvert on a very wet weekend I spent 45 minutes getting the heater going with nothing dry to use!

In my experience you can often find suitable dry fire starting material on the actual underside of fallen trees (a few near Scott Kilvert as I remember) you can also make good kindling by striping the wet bark off a stick about thumb thick and then shaving the wood ,takes time and effort and you do need a reasonable knife but it has worked for me .

The hut maximum capacity isn't actually defined and the fuel supplies never guaranteed. I would think these facts are as/more important general knowledge than numbers, conditions, lists and the inference of what to 'expect'.. If 34 private walkers are on the track this is the capacity... and its almost a given that one of the fuel sources will be out when needed most. Does this not render the stats, for practical purposes, meaningless?

Do you know if the gas cylinders were empty? valves on top frozen (bit early for that) or had someone turned off the stop *&%$#! to the hut as I cannot see Parks letting the gas run out at WFV this time of year,stand to be corrected of course

We stopped there on the way out on the 12th, only two weeks ago and the heater was still warm from those in the hut that evening. I was told along the way by a group that parks had just done a run to all the huts to restock everything for winter the week before we arrived so I was surprised to read this?

WFV has always been a bit finnicky, especially in icey weather. As with the other heaters, user error is often the first thought. Again, heating depends on budget, so the gas has always been at a lag to annual funding. Unfortunate for those who visit at the wrong time i guess.

At the end of may there was alot of gas at WVH and the track ranger thought it would last through the winter.

I am told there is no gas at WVH and very little at Windermere a week ago. Huge bunkers of Brickettes at Scott Kilvert a month ago.
One needs to be prepared for a cold hut up there.

Ranger checking the huts this week. heating at Pelion and KiaOra and I was told at Windermere and Waterfall

[Did not stay at Scott Kilvert or Echo Point.]

Bert Nicholls Hut now uses coal briquettes instead of wood. In case anyone cares

On the fuel front, Bert Nichols was running low on briquettes a week ago. Not aware of the amount of fuel at the others.

Doesnt surprise me, when we were there they were pouring it in by the bucket full, and people were so hot they were running around in t shirts. People dont think about others coming after them. There probably wont be a re fill of the bins until spring.
