What are you listening to?

Tue 17 Jul, 2012 8:59 pm

Music is something almost everyone enjoys, so I thought a thread dedicated to sharing peoples musical appreciations would be awesome. I'm not sure if there is a thread already dedicated, I had a quick squiz and couldn't see anything. So post what your'e listening to as of late, your all time favorites, recommendations and even your own music if that's the way you swing. It's basically anything music related..

The last few records that have been making the rounds as of late-

I'm working my way through the list of "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" which is based on a book, though I'm too cheap to shell out coin for it.

This has been made feasible by signing up to a streaming music service (MOG). Not sure how long it's going to take me - I've already heard many of the albums on the list, and it's unlikely I'm going to listen to absolutely all of them since I'm not enough of a "complete-ist" to give a full listen to albums/genres that aren't to my taste. But still an interesting distraction working my way though 500+ albums I've not heard before.

That list has some pretty solid stuff on it I must say...

I saw the Pogues at ANU, through a haze of bald heads and flying cans, was a big fan for a while. Do have a Billy Bragg album but i'm not convinced he can hold a tune? :P
I also like all sorts of music and always changes eg lately has been White Stripes to Ani DiFranco. Apparently records are the fastest growing sector, maybe partly cause most just now buy electronically. All mine are just on flash drives or storage. Do have some old vinyl records but they gather dust.

I would, but it would reveal too much about my obsession with The Muppets, Russian composers, kitschy lounge music and black metal.

Nice one Brendan! Jacki Oates' "Saturnine" is another good recent English folky album.

And Jerry Douglas' "Traveler" include duets with Eric Clapton, Mumford and Sons (Simon & Garfunkel's "The Boxer"), Keb Mo, Derek Trucks and others. Choice!

cheers

Wondered what they were up to and find this: http://www.theaureview.com/news/tour-up ... e-and-more apparently it was 23yrs ago and they have just toured again, first visit since then, same venue. A blast from the past, cheers

I note how a few here are into the Pogues. How about Weddings, Parties, Anything? Great Aussie contemporaries of the Pogues. :)

Ah yes, Weddo's.

Fondly remember the stage being pelted with 10 cent pieces during 'Ticket in Tatts'.

Hhmmm...
The maximum post size has mot yet been discovered on this forum (has it now...), rather unbelievably.
But, my list of what I listen to, well, there's scope for the longest post on the forum yet!
Not that it's my fave (like it's possible to have one fave) but one that comes to mind is Telegraph Road by Dire Straits. Thats's a song from the Love Over Gold CD.
Gets me going every time, especially the long jam towards the end. From memory the 11- 13 minute mark.
Fleetwood Mac, Joshua Kadison, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Moody Blues, Yanni, Billy Joel, Simple Minds (appropriately), Talking Heads, U2 (Joshua Tree!!!), oh where do I stop!

I know where I stop, that would be J. Beaner (not a typo) or No Direction (also not ).

When I did the South Coast Track last year with some mates, A tale they won’t believe was our theme song. There were six of us together, so we called ourselves the 'Jolly Hungry Crew' .....lucky I was the b@stard carrying the axe  hahha kidding of course...it was a leatherman

I let myself get suckered into singing the chorus to a tour group. They had heard the tale but couldn't believe there was a song.. (i suspect a couple actually had already heard the song..)

I wonder if ol Alex would be the ultralight hatchet type? :)

Not really, the audio quality degrades every time you listen to one, they take up a lot of space etc but I do miss the artwork that you get with vinyl, some classic album covers out there, something that died out with CD's and especially now with MP3's.

For me, In the evening its mostly been the jazz greats like Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, John Coltrane & some jazz compilations to mention a few and also a few contemporary albums from the likes of Melody Gardot & Madeleine Peyroux (I like jazz :D )

In the car on high rotation lately, but this changes often, has been Sarah blasko, johhny cash, cold chisel, 'negotiations and love songs' paul simon and a classical CD that was recorded locally called 'under the tall trees', very nice.

Wish I'd heard you sing that!! :D
I seem to sidestep that particular topic when it inevitably crops up..
Reckon Ol Alex P would have liked the feel of a heavy axe to swing. . .

Oh gawd where to start (or rather where to stop...)

ALL time favorite is easy...JJ Cale. Nothing comes close.

After that, oh well, here's a few
Gomez, Koop, Eels, Pink Floyd, John Lee Hooker, RL Burnside, Slim Harpo, Massive Attack, Rolling Stones, Beautiful Girls, Led Zeppelin, Doors, Them, Chet Baker, Morcheeba, Bitter:Sweet, Iron & Wine (esp with Calexico!), dDub, Mose Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Miles Davies (mostly "the Hot Spot" with John Lee Hooker. superb), some Xavier Rudd and Ash Grunwald etc etc

I could add a few pages but this will do for now

Oh, I see there is some love for the Pogues :) Great band! I saw them way back in my wilder days (88/89 or so) and it is def one of the best and most fun gig I've ever been to

Haha, thanks for the heads up. I think I must go! I did NOT expect Shane McGowan to live this long. He must be a medical miracle. I hope he got himself some dentures at least.

EDIT Oh no they are not even coming to Hobart :(

I think they have come and gone stibb. I wouldn't have been able to go back in April anyhow. Looks like they are still touring around Europe :)
McG, it wasn't pretty. I'm sure you could do a much more authentic version  I'll have to keep that in mind har har
