Hike Hammock/Tarp wanted..

Postby The Trout Hunter » Fri 03 Aug, 2012 6:49 am

G'day everyone,

I have been looking into Hammocks hiking for a little while now and thought about giving it a shot instead of the tent. The only thing is, I don't want to go buying a new one before at least trying it out. I see there are some cheaper ones out there I could snap up very cheaply to get a feel for it, but thought I might ask here before spilling my coin..

If anyone has any thoughts or maybe a decent hammock or a full setup they would sell, please let me know as I'm pretty keen :)

Thanks in advance,
Brad

Hey Brad, I don't have one to sell, but if you're just wanting a try-out and there's no-one locally who's willing to lend you theirs, what about making yourself a DIY gathered end hammock? You can do this pretty cheaply from nylon ripstop from Spotlight or the like, and there's plenty of advice or instructions over on HammockForums like this http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showpost.php?p=221134&postcount=1. You can use a cheap blue tarp, and a sleeping bag and mat to complete your test rig. You should be all right without a bug net at this time of year.
Come on lads, let's get home. The sky's beginning to bruise, night must fall, and we shall be forced to camp.

Hey mate, living in WA I can't really lend you a hammock but I made a ripper DIY gathered end from some ripstop. The hammock weighed about 300 grams without a bug net. (Made following the instructions on hammockforums.com)
As for the tarp you can use some 1443r tyvek.

Gday Brad

I can highly recommend the tenth wonder hammocks. They are great quality and sold cheaply through their ebay store. Their jungle hammock is great for the price tag and Neil will even do custom stuff if you message him (I got him to do a camo one). I only sold mine as I couldn't resist an upgrade to a dangerbird from the states.

I also have a spare tarp (sil nylon) that Id be willing to part with cheap if your interested. PM me if youd like pics or more details.

Cheers and enjoy. Warning hammocking is highly addictive :-)

Edit: here's a link to their stuff.

AMTC are another one here in Oz that sell the DD hammocks (similar to the one above I posted). They've got some good stuff

Thanks everyone :)

Should get my new tarp setup this week and hopefully a hammock sometime soon, still in the reading review phase.. There seems to be only a few brands to consider..

Thanks :)
