I wear a Sunday Afternoons 'Cloudburst' in winter (or any season in Tassie) and their 'Adventure Hat' in summer.

Not fantastic in wind, but great shelter otherwise. They have a stiff brim on the front and a floppy one at the rear, so they play nice with backpacks. Previously, I wore a kangaroo skin hat from Barmah hats, it was good but ultimately not waterproof enough despite lathering it with snoseal.

I like a full brim to protect my delicate skin but they are especially useful when you wear glasses - keeps most of the rain off.

Beanie if cold.
sun hat if sunny (If I remember to pack one) mostly to stop the top of my head from burning.

STill have not found the best hat yet.

We came across these two Spanish walkers on NZ's Rees-Dart Track. The shawl/scarf "thingy" is made of merino, is cool, protects against both sun and sandflies, and is very comfortable.

It also has a certain "come hither" charm, as you can obviously see from the pic. of me trying it on

I wear the sea to summit pilbara hat and love it. The brim is wide enough to offer good sun protection but not so wide that it catches on your back behind you (pet hate). Its light, sits well and is water resistant though ventilates well and is not too hot. Really like it

Akubra for me too, ...the territory.
Why...o'.... why.
Because it has an extra wide brim to keep that harsh queensland sun at bay.
Its Aussie made.
I also like the fact its entwined in our nations history & culture.
Its a true blue aussie icon.
Quality item. Love it.

Plus it makes me feel like Indiana Jones...or more to the point, his aging father,
when I'm blazing a trail through a rainforest, with it on my head....

When it's cold in Winter I wear a beanie, when it's wet, I of course just use the hood on my rain jacket. In the Summer on day walks, I use an Akubra Sombrero. I like everything about it and it's Aussie made, but on overnight walks I don't wear it because it's just too big and hard to look after.

same here, but I add a head sock under cap, how I wear the head sock just depends if its..... hot and needing sun protection on neck, windy and wearing for ear covering or tied up behind cap to cover hair to keep clean or not being washed for days

I don't wear a hat for shade or sun protection (olive skin, big head of white hair,) but often carry one to keep sun out of my eyes. I find that they trap a lot of heat, and prevent perspiration evaporating.

I do have a kind of bandanna thing (like a high tech sweatband) which is useful to keep the sweat out of my eyes while leaving my head free to cool naturally.

In winter, around the campfire, at night, a beanie.

Yeah that hot head doesnt attract me to hats at all....to hot. I have lots of hair too which helps keep the sun from my skin. Only once have I started to get a nose sunburnt hiking and I fashioned a piece of cloth taped to the sunglasses to shade my nose....stylin'!

And it's not quite a hat replacement, but the funniest thing I've seen as sun protection was a guy who was having trouble with the sun's glare in his eyes, so he mixed some charcoal with sunscreen and smeared it under his eyes -- American footballer style -- which made him look like a raccoon. Allegedly it helped!

That's my technique too. My face / neck has never burnt on a walk, so that's never convinced me I need one. The whole rain and glasses thing would make sense, but I just take the glasses off and walk blind if they get too bad.

I'd like to learn this hiking Jedi trick for repelling sunburn !

Yep, I certainly don't wear hats on those... or sunscreen. It isn't a Jedi trick. It's simply that the universe loves me, so doesn't allow me to burn!

Hopefully I never have to see a skin cancer specialist about a worrying mole in a region most wouldn't get much sun!

I use a Tilley cotton hat, made in Canada. The label says a hat "will be replaced free if it wears out". I can vouch for the fact that the statement is true. My first one lasted for at least ten years, probably more, and after a bit of a stitch-up it can still be used for gardening. So while certainly not cheap (over $100), I'd consider them good value. And certainly cheaper than treating melanomas.

Not a big fan of hats because they mess with my peripheral vision but have already had a few BCCs removed so I force myself to use them.
I bought the Mont Paddler on recommendation by a hiker/cyclist friend and the best feature is the beaked front so it doesn't flip up or down in wind like most full brimmed sun hats.
I also wear the Asian style conical paddy hat for broader sun protection if it's not obstructed by a pack.

I also have a Tilley, the Airflow. I LOVE it. I wear it whenever I can. It gives decent sun protection and is light and comfortable. I never have a sweat issue and it has never blown off even in extreme wind. It sheds water and cleans up nicely in the washing machine. I can HIGHLY recommend Tilley.

I hate wearing hats. Have a Barmah Squashy for really stinking hot sunny days (mainly for Flinders Ranges/Centre/Top End stuff), but hardly ever wear it.
Beanie when it's cold. Buff as hood or Saharienne, depending on conditions.

I tend to take my head gear on and off throughout the day. So if I'm walking in shade, the hat comes off; if I'm sitting for lunch and cooling down, the beanie goes on and so on. I always wear sunscreen to protect my pasty Irish skin.

Hat is a cheapo baseball cap, which when not in use clips to a carabiner on one of the front pouches of my aarn. The beanie is a softshell job from macpac and gets stuffed into my pocket. This way I can toggle headgear without dipping into a pack or stopping.

depending on the weather, I take one or more of the following on a trip, although today was caught out in cold winds and forgot to bring anything other than a summer cap i found in the car!

outdoor research windtrek - windfleece, double layer around the bottom half. warm as in cold conditions

outdoor research ninjaclava balaclava - thin fleece can combine with other headwear in cold conditions,

outdoor research sentinel brim hat - thin breathable for hot sunny weather

Outdoor Research Halo Sombrero - lightweight waterproof rain hat, wire round the brim for a bit of stiffness

Outdoor Research Drifter Cap - waterproof peak cap. good for windier days when its raining and too warm for a hood

lightweight mesh peak cap - good in windier summer weather.

pollypropelene balaclava. - good for cool windy, or cold mild conditions

merino beanie - good for cool windy or cold mild conditions

nylon shell peak cap - good for moderate windy weather...

akubra safari. i have a couple. i like the narrow brim which doesn't interfere with the pack, and allows ease of movement through dense scrub. bonus is i look like indianna jones when wearing them.

I hate hats but my wife makes me wear them as I burn to easy,

So I have a Akubra for normal camping
A Columbia Omni-Shade for hiking
And a Rodd & Gunn Flyfishing hat, that of course they no longer make but I love it but don't wear unless fly fishing cause I can't replace it when it wears out

picked myself up a barmha hat today. blo0dy good buy. got it discounted from mate at walking shop. its light as feather, balls up to nothing, springs back to shape instantly and looks good. It was belated xmas present from my wife and along with my tent is my favourite xmas present

Look at this post from 2007 and Barmah hats are still ünder rated", these hats weigh next to nothing and are just nothing short of fabulous.

Akubra cattleman, shrunk now can't wear it.. Was too sweaty anyway.
OR goretex peak hat with fleece liner -for skiing in awful weather
OR Paclite hat, it's Good in cold wet conditions but too sweaty for most walking.
Two watership hats for wearing around and traveling, not for walking.one has shrunk a bit too much, but great hats.
A variety of army hats from my time in the army. The terry toweling lined bush hat is the ducks guts for walking.
OR legionnaire cap, rarely worn as it's too complex to setup comfortably, but good for skiing.
oR hat for kayaking, it's too wide for wearing anywhere else!
Various beanies, buffs helmet liners etc.
Just bought an OR snoqualmie hat online, I have no idea why-I just think I have a thing for hats.
I'm thinking about an akubra coober pedy, nicest looking hat around IMHO.and I miss wearing my akubra slouch hat.
I would really love a terry toweling hat... Do you think I can find one anywhere?
