Snow shoes in NOVEMBEr

Postby couscousman » Tue 23 Oct, 2012 2:20 pm

Hey All
Starting november I will commence the AAWT. Just wondering what your thoughts are on taking snow shoes. By Mid November how much snow will there be on the Razorback, Howitt and Bogong Plains? And how much snow will be on the Main Range? As most of the tracks go across ridges are snow shoes a good idea or is the snow firm enough to walk on?

Any thoughts, ideas and past experiences would be most welcome.

Regards
Jesse

Did this section in 2010, no need for snow shoes, only few snow drifts left on Main Range and well established tracks had been worn through.

No need, there's nothing a but a few remnant drifts left.

Agree with all the above. Do be aware that the Main Range and North to about Kiandra can be dangerous/unpassable at any time of year due to snow - happened to me on 20 December when doing the AAWT North-South. I was snowed in for a day at Grey Mare with a 30cm blanket cover. While I could have walked in that snow depth I was worried about a sprained ankle as I couldn't make out the clumps of vegetation and rocks. It also made the river crossings quite difficult. The Geehi was to the top of the legs and the others not so bad.

Got a window seat on a flight from Canberra to Melbourne yesterday. There's some drifts of snow on the main range and a few on the BHP, but not much. I thought there'd still be some on Feathertop but couldn't see any. It was just drifts, not large patches. A bit on Bogong, but looked like drifts only between summit and tree line. Not a lot, but as Mark says, can snow any time of the year.
