green pea flour

Postby Osbos » Tue 20 Nov, 2012 5:37 am

Hi folks. We'll be doing some bicycle touring in Australia in December and January. I don't think we can bring green pea flour with us. The customs people are quite stringent about what food products can enter the country. I've e-mailed a few health food stores to ask if they stock the product but none of them have heard of it. Does anyone on this forum know if green pea flour is available in Australia?
The pea flour is sweet, not bitter, and when combined with powdered chicken soup mix and powdered onion makes a very tasty pea soup. A one pot meal.
Here is the link to the product that we can get here in Canada.

I don't see why it would be an issue if its properly processed and packaged. Why not just bring it anyway and just make sure you declare it.

Thanks Strider. We've already thought of that. It is a matter of weight. Since we're bike touring, the bikes, camping equipment, etc., weighs a lot. No need to add more.
As for bringing in the flour, we think we can just say, when asked about food products, that we have some dried soup mix and some coffee. When the customs guys see we have bikes and camping equipment, they'll forget about the food. They'll want to pull out the tent, inspect the pegs for dirt, have a close look at the bikes and maybe even disinfect the tyres. We've been through this before and even though we clean up our equipment really well before travelling, those guys still aren't satisfied until they've pulled everything apart and examined it. Well, that is their job and they are very cordial.

I haven't seen urbswurst in a long time so probably no green pea flour either, but dried green peas are a staple here and usually quite fresh (<2 years old ) and if you add a calcium tablet to make lime water and prehydrate will cook in 12 to 20 minutes, or if you find some-one with a burr grinder you could mill a weeks supply in a few minutes. At some Indian grocers you can buy dahl flour tho
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart
