Last Year's Christmas Deal with the Wife

I'm not really into Christmas trees, but early each December I go out hunting for radiata pines growing as weeds by the side of the road to bring one into the house for the Christmas tree in order to please the rest of my family. As much as I'm not keen on the idea, I reckon that a plastic tree would be even worse. I mean, what is the point of a plastic tree?

Anyhow, last year I brought home the usual sized tree - Ie, just tall enough to touch the ceiling with the top branch bending over a tad. But while out there I noticed another larger one that I thought would be just the right size to go at the bottom of the stairs and reach up to the ceiling of the top level of the house. But I figured that my wife would not approve so I left it there. After telling her about this she said that I could have set it up, so long as she still gets her "normal" christmas tree in the lounge room. So I said that I would do it next year.

Well, she had completely forgotten about that conversation when I brought home the two storey high christmas tree this year. She got her "normal" tree in the lounge room, and while her and the kids were decorating it, I managed to get the "Griswald" christmas tree into the house complete with branches sticking out of the door and blocking access to the stairs. I had to saw a couple of extra branches off, and still have to duck under one of the when walking up the stairs or through the hallway.

My wife still claims she can't remember last year's christmas tree deal. Anyhow she's shorter than me and doesn't have to duck too much when walking up the stairs.

It's just the right height though, it just touches the ceiling on the top level of the house.

My wife said something similar. Something along the lines of, "I don't get why you don't like christmas trees, but you're all excited about this one". I told her it was a "boy" thing - It's not about the Christmas Tree, it's about having a whopping great two storey tree inside the house - just because I can (even if it is a weed).

One problem though. I bought some cheap Chicken Feed lights for it on the way home yesterday. I should have thought about the lights BEFORE setting up the tree because the top of the tree could not be reached from anywhere. After failing to train the cat to do the job*, I used two broom handles sticky-taped together, and a meat hook from my butchering kit. It was a bit tricky, but in the end I was able to hook the lights onto a high upper branch from half-way up the stairs.

*No, I didn't really try to train the cat to hang the lights. But I am trying to train it to catch the rabbits in the front yard. Telepathic messages aren't working yet. Neither is waking up the cat from it's dozing on the couch, pointing to the rabbits through the window and saying, "go get the bunnies!".
