[Wanted] MacPac Olympus

Postby GraemeSpedding » Wed 31 Oct, 2012 10:53 am

Good Morning All
I am stil lucky enough to have a MAcpac Olympus made before the " new " Olympus came out. I had MAcapc in NZ manufactuer a new fly for me about 10 years back and this is still going strong, but am looking for a new inner - one with the heavy duty floor that resists a lot of attempts at poking holes in it. My current one has finally got more than a few holes and I wud like one that has had little or no use - hoping that someone may have one that they bought and have rarely used. am happy to buy the whole tent of course.

Pls reply to this forum and i will get back intouch.
Cheers
Graeme

Tara I think Graeme is after the old Heavy Duty PVC floor, the same as used in my Fairydown plateau and in my opinion well worth the extra weight

the floors are still heavy duty, but not with PVC (too many nasty chemicals). Rather, for Torrentwear XP floors we now use a water based PU, but still several coatings to achieve a minimum spec of 10,000mm. The main changes over the years have been in various configurations of vestibule sizes and doorway configurations.

Trouble is only (As far as i know) PVC acts as a vapour barrier, when using a tent with a PU coated floor I wake up too often with water between the floor and my mat due to vapour migration through the PU coating, even double coating my PU floors with diluted silicon never helped. The only tent floors that haven't had this problem are my Fairydown Plateau and my old Vango Force10

Hi Moondog- yeh this is is correct and I agree whole heartedly. The floor as been well worth its weight when stuck on mud and flooding campsites. Its just getting a bit religious in its old age - all (w)holey like.

PU can also be a vapor barrier. Not at PU is porous like in rainwear. Moisture under your mat would be moving uphill on a pressure gradient so it would be unlikely to be water vapor passing through the floor material.

I don't get the problem in my PVC floored tents tho, so I have always assumed that it was a vapour problem, in fact this was the main selling point of the heavy floor when I bought it way back when, and I did think the salesmen at Bush & Mountain Sports were experienced and knowledgeable I don't get this problem in my Foxhole bivvy sack which has a Hypalon floor either
