Upcoming Everest movies

Postby andrewbish » Fri 22 Feb, 2013 10:57 am

Saw this news items regarding the impending release of a couple of Everest movies - one related to the 1996 disasters and the other relating to Mallory.

I only found out recently that my uncle was guided up Mt Cook by Rob Hall, who later died in that 1996 epic. Small world.

i hope the movie on rob hall is better than the previous version of Krakauers' "into thin air" it was a b grade cringe worthy movie that did no justice to hall or the situation the climbers were in....
at least bale is a quality actor....

Haha, that is a very generous rating.

Not Everest and might need a new thread on mountaineering movies but late one night I ended up watching an interesting movie on the Eiger. Called "north face"(2008)- in German about the nazi/ propaganda effort to be the first to climb Eiger in Suisse. Also if interested in the Eiger google Ueli Steck and watch a you tube of his speed climb- wow!

Not a movie and going further off topic, but there was a series of climbing shows on Sunday morning called first accents. One particular show had a bloke who solo free climbs with a parachute. He called it free base and it was about him climbing the eiger north face, he was able to make it to the top without having to use the parachute

Also looking forward to the movie version of in to thin air, haven't seen the first telemovie and by the sounds of it I don't think Ill try looking to it

I really liked that one! A true story, apparently quite accurate (except some pretty crucial "details" in the end!) although they added the romantic drama

I guess with enough amount of alcohol (i.e. a LOT) it could be a laugh, I was sober and it was uncomfortably embarrassing.

They're a terrific watch. There's one about a couple of brothers who climb El Capitan in Yosemite - and one of them is a paraplegic, who hauls himself up inch by inch. Another is about a crazy dude who free climbs (ie sans rope) El Capitan. My fav is the one about the two young American climbers who attempt to climb a huge wall in China.

YouTube killed off the Banff Film Festival.

I went in 2010, and realised I had seen at least three of the 'films' weeks before on a slow night at home. Admittedly this included the spoof of guys setting up a massive water slide and airtime that followed before landing in a kiddies pool !

And besides, we have all recently been living through Banff-like events in the news - the Euro guy who free-fell and parachuted from the edge of space, and the Tim Jarvis-lead Shackleton recreation of sailing/mountaineering/trekking in Southern latitudes come to mind.
Live everyday as if it were your last... one day you will be right.

if you're a climbing nut there's still more of it to watch at the movies. plus on the big screen

and "nordwand" NOrth face, doesnt have a hollywood ending, if you want a happy ending , be prepared for disappointment....
