OZ -Temps plummet across southern half

Postby wayno » Sun 17 Mar, 2013 3:59 pm

It hasn't taken long but March over much of the southern half of Australia has turned from extreme heat to temperatures dropping below zero across higher parts of the south.

In a replay of March 2008 it has only taken a week for summer to turn to autumn in Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, the ACT and New South Wales.

Wayno - I think the person who wrote that had a bit too much time on their hands, or were trying to scare kiwis into not travelling to the western paradise. Strange to say it is Autumn and this is what you expect - a quick cold snap which gives way for the next 7 days to daytime highs in the mid to high teens (Cabramurra, Perisher Valley etc all 1500-1700m elevation) tonight will be cold but the rest of the time lows above freezing.

Bet the weather isn't quite as benign at 1700 metres on Mt Cook.

We had a beautiful sunny day here in the Northern Rivers with the temperature hitting 32°C early this afternoon before the cold front came through. I checked the thermometer not long after and it had dropped to 24°. Best time of year in my opinion, as we transition from summer to the cooler months - or vice versa, the arrival of spring is pretty nice :D .

Wayno it is the norm to spell it with capitals as OZ is such a wonderful country ! Isn't that why there are more kiwis here than in New Zealand??

it has only taken a week for summer to turn to autumn in Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, the ACT and New South Wales.

Apparently they don't get strong contrast between seasons in NZ?

Autumn always arrives quickly here in SA. Within a week is pretty normal.

depends where you are... can get reasonable contrasts in central otago and inland south canterbury., temp can hit the low thirties and go well into sub zero minus ten or more in winter..
