overland track fishing

Hi all...

first time on this site ... just thought I'd add a question that's been bugging me... other than Lake St Clair what is the fishing like along the overland track?

I dont think there is much fishing actually near the overland track.
There are some good lakes at the southern end of the park though.
You could try Lake Petrarch ,or the Hugel Lakes --Forgotten lake and Shadow lake.
These 3 all have plenty of nice browns.
The upper Mersey lakes --Meston ,Junction and Youd are good rainbow fisheries but
are a bit far off track for a visit while walking the overland track.

Last time I was at Shadow and Forgotten lakes, they were both frozen solid... Coldest night I can remember! I could imagine that would present as a challenge to the idea of fishing...
But, that was the middle of July.

After my Frenchman’s Cap walk in mid December I stayed over at Lake St Claire for a few nights. The first person I met in the campsite was a Tasmania fisherman who offered me a brown trout for dinner. When I got talking to his companions they informed me that there are heaps of pan sized trout in the lake. In fact there is that many that there is not enough food to build up larger fish.
Apparently spinning with Tassie Devil lures from the sandy beaches is one way to get a feed. While this might not be quite the wilderness experience you are looking for, it would nevertheless be a great way to sit back and relax at the end of the track .

I will give these some thought ,and will defiantly advise as to what's happening where.
Pan size trout are fine... (I've caught my trophies over in NZ:)
I must say though... big trout aren't silly and if small trout are being caught then it's more than likely big trout are growing old, even if it is on fry and fingerlings...

There are some good lakes in the far south of the park though. Explore the Overland Track and Cradle incredible Mountain area a World Heritage Site. Rest and recover real home comforts and friendly hospitality after walking the Overland Track.
