[POLL] Old topics removed if poster hasn't visited in...?

Once an item is sold, found or thread is no longer needed we move it here. These maybe helpful for historic reasons.

How long absent from the forum before Market Square topics are locked and archived?

Poll ended at Wed 26 Jun, 2013 7:10 pm

Do not archive my topic regardless of whether or not I visit the forum any more.

[POLL] Old topics removed if poster hasn't visited in...?

Postby tasadam » Tue 25 Jun, 2013 7:10 pm

In an effort to remove Market Square topics from the Market Square forum that are no longer active, and archive them in the Sold, Claimed, closed forum, I am considering locking and moving topics where the member who posted the topic has not visited the forum in a certain amount of time.

But, how much time is reasonable?

Opinions please, comments welcome.

I could just do it, but thought I would ask.

Interesting question, given we apparently have a pair of boots which have sold 3 years after their first listing.

I reckon 90 days, which isn't one of your poll options.

I think you misunderstand the question.
It's whether the person who posted the item has visited the forum, not whether the item has been listed for 60 days, 90 days or whatever.

The intention of the poll is to deal with existing topics that are old and where many of those older topics are from people who haven't visited the forum since last year or before. But I failed to mention that, so I will let the poll run its course and see what discussion comes of it, with a view to change how the Market Square runs in the future (making it better - more current, less reading through irrelevant topics).

The plan at this stage is for future topics to have an update made to it within a certain number of months to indicate the topic is still current (item available or whatever). And when a topic isn't locked but there has been no activity for X number of months, either the topic will automatically expire (saving us some work dealing with individual topics but creating some initial work writing some tricky code).
We were thinking making X about 6 months for future topics, but haven't decided on that one yet.

When something sells, it is the poster's responsibility to lock it. However this often gets overlooked.
Topics that are locked are moved to a separate sub-forum. This means that all posts in the market square, theoretically, contain items which are actually still available.
It doesn't waste people's time PM'ing or replying to topics only to have their questions unanswered, as sometimes happens.

As an administrator around here, I thought I would spend my time doing something that might help those on the forum that use the Market Square.
But thanks for your thoughtful input.

No, I didn't. I think you should look at both.

As an aside, how about sub-sections? Eg. "clothing and footwear", "packs and tents" which might make it easier to trawl through the items listed.

That will be considered if there are enough posts for it once all the topics that are finished / no longer relevant have been removed.

More important to split the "Equipment" forum into sub-forums for specific discussions on tents / boots / etc... Big job, that one.

Oh yes, that would be useful.

Can you define what is meant
by where the member who posted the topic has not visited the forum
Do I need to visit my listing, just log on?

Wazza

If you have old posts in the Market Square, and I'm talking more than a few months (probably a lot more), then so long as you have visited the forum within X number of days (log in to the forum then log straight out will record the "last visit" date to me), your post will remain active. This allows me to PM you and ask if the topic is still relevant, assuming you will eventually get the PM as you are an active member. It also makes an assumption that you will check any messages received that may be an enquiry about your Market Square topic, or possibly visit your topic and read any replies.

The thinking at this stage for future posts is that "for sale" topics will need to have a post made within a generous timeframe, after which the topic will expire and be moved. Still working that one out, this is all about clearing the Market Square of existing older topics.

Anyone is welcome to and encouraged to visit their Market Square topics & post a reply from time to time indicating it's still available.

Well it looks like the general consensus is that if someone hasn't visited the forum for a good couple of months, their Market Square topics can be archived.
Therefore, initially, for topics that were created prior to 2013 and have had no input to that topic in 2013, AND where the user has been absent from the forum for say 3 months, I shall archive the topics. The topics can always be recreated, or unlocked and moved back into the Market Square simply by contacting me.

This should go a long way toward cleaning out the Market Square of old topics.

I'll initially only do Wanted or For Sale topics - assuming Lost and Found will still be current.

EDIT
I am moving this topic to the Sold Claimed Closed area as well, it's just clutter now.

For the record, I have contacted quite a number of active members asking them to review their older topics. The time may come when I will make the assumption that the older topics are closed, based on no response.
