HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FALL OUT OF SHAPE?

it takes only about 8 to 12 days to lose cardiovascular training adaptations. “They’ll decline by half in about 12 days if you do nothing at all

Peak aerobic/anaerobic power can come and go quickly. Endurance base takes a lot longer to lose and to gain.

Well, have to put some positive spin on that or it's too depressing. Training is hard work and the bit of performance improvement don't come easy. With that kind of message, it's way too depressing. But it's always good to know that one will be able to preserve endurance far longer. ;)

theres cases of top athletes having to stop exercising for weeks due to injury,,, then turning up and winning a big event..
abebe bikila did this and won the olympic marathon in the 60's after six weeks off running after a burst apendix
emmil zatopek was hospitalised for a couple of weeks before running a world record.
vladimir kuts had a similar incident....

It only takes one day (or 10 min)....
That one day where you feel like you deserve a rest instead of a walk....
.... and then the next day you feel that the last rest wasn't enough...
.... and then the exercise is too much cause you're out of shape...
.... and then the walks are too long because you're getting older....
.... and then you need to spend more time with your family...

Well said Steve. I've fallen a fair way out of shape over the past few months and walks have gone from daily to a couple of weeks apart. You've inspired me to get out for a walk tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that..

Age (I am 66)is not the issue for me "uncle arthur " is , I could handle it in my neck and back and fingers but it decided to descend to my left foot with a vengeance that made walking very painful, juggling drugs looks like I may be able to head out for an easy walk soon and will be interested how fit I am however with regret will not be able to tackle the off track walks that my erstwhile Stroller mates will be doing :(

I hear your pain.
I came down with Plantar Fascitis (tears in the ligaments of the feet) a few years ago that still makes me hobble around some days like an old bloke with Arthur-itis.
Even on good days rugged off track walks can leave me limping.
I hope the drugs help you get back outside
cheers

How long does it take to fall out of shape?
Not long. I'm about to get a very rude shock heading back into the mountains this summer.
I have a personal problem with comfort eating when I'm trying to manage depression and PTSD relapse so my fitness decline is accelerated when I'm forced off my feet.
After 6 months not being able to walk 200m without pain I am noticing that I'm starting to feel every one of my 41 years. Cardio, muscle, mind, joints, everything needs re-training. My cardio dropped within weeks of stopping and muscle within a month, joints started seizing up within a week and I'm not a flexible person to start with. My brain is ready but I will need to be very aware of my mental stamina when I need to climb over a few pain barriers. Thankfully my physical stamina is still okay, not great, but needs work.

I think the secret will be slow and steady. Start off with short day walks with a day pack and work up. I have allowed extra weeks on the AAWT so i can take it easy, especially that first incline

(Good news is that I have had surgery and almost fully recovered from that, get the all clear next week. Champing at the bit!)

Re: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FALL OUT OF SHAPE?

Postby South_Aussie_Hiker » Tue 24 Sep, 2013 10:08 am

I'm quite fit for enough for multiday pack hikes with 20kg, but can't run well at all.
I used to have the running fitness but in 2002 snapped a heap of ligaments in my right ankle and was on crutches for 6 weeks. Ankle healed fine, but my knee on that leg has never been the same. Physio said the damage to my knee was caused by my body trying to protect my ankle. So I stopped running.

It's quite annoying really that my ankle is now 100% but my knee is permanently sore!!

However, my wife has been getting into her running again after two kids (with great results!) so it's inspired me to get back to running.

What I have done is started taking glucosamine (at the ripe old age of 31!) every day. I used to take it only when my knee started to get sore, but that doesn't work. The regularity of a daily tablet has helped the knee enough that I've just started running again.

But I definitely think running and hiking require completely different fitness types. I can hike up Mt Lofty with 20kg on my back in 50 mins, but ask me to run 5km down the road, and it kills me!

Given the early onset of significant knee troubles at the age of 31, is taking up running again a wise decision? For atraumatic aerobic and body conditioning, both swimming and cycling are worth serious consideration.

Hi GPSGuided.

Don't worry, I won't be going overboard! I've been advised recently that if I could get back to some gentle running with my progress on glucosamine, it may strengthen my knee and further reduce the problems. I've also made a few changes to how I sit at work and combined with stretches it seems to be making a big difference.

And if starts hurting again, I won't hesitate to stop immediately. My income depends on being able to use my legs at work and pass a medical every year. I won't be risking my future (or my family's future for that matter) if it doesn't seem to be working out.
