Interesting reading. Thanks. Always more to these things than meets the eye.

I still reckon he's drinking cocktails on a beach somewhere

I found this interesting:
One of the strongest arguments against the theory that he disappeared deliberately are the pings recorded from Srawn’s mobile phone. As his phone checked in with the surrounding towers, it left a digital breadcrumb trail that police were later able to triangulate to determine his approximate position and time.
I'm no communications expert, but even I know how to prevent a phone from sending pings, so the fact that it left a digital trail up to a point and no further tells us nothing really.

Tells them that he was out there. The idea of him faking his disappearance is just stupid. Much safer ways of disappearing than wandering around the Main Range in May in a storm.

If we want to be strictly accurate, it tells them the phone was out there. It doesn't tell them whether or not it was in his possession.
There are some really odd features to this disappearance, which is why the theory that he staged it has been floated by some.

I think most people drift over the disappear on purpose angle at some point (myself included) to make sure they leave no stone unturned. As for the " really odd features to this disappearance", I didn't find too many personally.
There is simply too much terrain that hasn't and may never be covered by dedicated search teams. When you wander through the higher alpine regions of the Main range, you can see a long way and the travel is easy in good weather with low ankle high grasses.
Move across to the edges of the Western Faces and it answers all the questions about not being found. It would be quite the conspiracy to achieve. Not impossible of course.

That really is clutching at straws. He gave is mobile to someone else? Or maybe aliens.
There is nothing odd, or that unusual. There are two scenarios that happen, either someone becomes disoriented and wanders until they have an accident or they get caught out in extreme weather. Almost always they will be associated with odd decisions because otherwise they wouldn't have happened. Sometimes it will be bad luck as well.
Generally we don't hear about the people who almost became a statistic because they managed to find their way home before anyone missed them.

There are odd features to every mystery. Even if they find him there still be lots of unanswered and unanswerable questions.
