wanted : silva 40 button compass

Once an item is sold, found or thread is no longer needed we move it here. These maybe helpful for historic reasons.

Hi all after a silver 40 button compass.
Found them in queensland but the guy shop wants $18.50 just to deliver it. They item weigh s in at a whopping 2 grams. $18.50 rip off.
The compass itself only about $17

Anyway does anyone know where I could by one from. Rang rays outdoors they seem to only sell fridges these days.

Where'd you See it Walkerchris77?

If it's In Brisbane, I could grab one and post it to you, probably wouldn't cost more than the 60c stamp cost :D

I do very much appreciate the offer. But dont expect anyone to go out of their way for me. Unless they are very close to the shop. They are in willow bank. Im not tight I just think $18.50 is a bit much to send a 2 gram item. Id pay $10 but $18.50 is more than the item it self

Shame, that is kinda in the middle of nowhere.
You could find out how much it'd cost to ship to Burbank... and then I could post it :D
I am going past there on the 28th August on my drive down to the Green Gully walk in NSW but that's not much help to you either I'd imagine...

That being said I could drive the 30min out there, charge you fuel AND postage for less than $18.50, which kinda proves how ridiculous that shipping cost is. I am posting my arc Blast pack to Victoria and it's only costing $13.85!!! and it weighs 240x as much :D

Forgive my ignorance, but what are button compasses used for? Obviously not practical for map navigation.

In my case, absolutely for map navigation. If you need to take an accurate bearing, then, yeah, you need a base compass, but for stuff like rogaining, it's generally sufficient to be able to orient the map,and then use features to work out where you are. Actually even in track walking, with a little bit of offtrack, that's all that's necessary in my experience but YMMV. Unless you're needing to take accurate bearings, with declination etc, all you need is to make sure the map is around the right way. I hook one of these button compasses on my watch, then all I have to do is turn my wrist so it's parallel and I have my directions sorted. No need to get a larger base compass out. Thumb compasses were designed for this exact purpose, albeit with a little more style than a humble button compass http://lggagnon.wordpress.com/2012/07/2 ... b-compass/

$20 is indeed excessive for a unit like this. Like the thermometers, just get on eBay or Aliexpress and buy $10 of those $1 ones and pick one. You'll still have $10 spare.

It isn't quite relevant but I bought a button compass for my "survival" kit and because it was black and so small I promptly dropped it and lost it. BCB from the cadet shop and reasonably accurate

Thanks md, will have a look at cadet shop. I do have the cheap $1 but it takes about 20 to find northish (if sure if thats a word) and apparently the silva ones are better quality would want to be for $35 delivered.

And as for for the one you lost , hopefully someone lost will find it and find their way back. (Unless u lost it in your back yard. If there was someone lost in your back yard then thats a worrie).

I've got one of these guys

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PYSER-SGI-SA ... 0406205033

Somewhat more expensive then the ones your looking at but the postage is only $2 :)

I bought mine around 10 years ago and I don think it cost me more then 20bux back then, perhaps if you shop around or buy from the USA you can get one cheaper.

Travis.

travis I have one of these two. They are tiny and a few dollars for postage is great. I understand if the average person has to go to the post office and that cost money, but the site I was on was a company that probably post heaps of items every day. And $18.50 to post a $17 item that weigh s 2 grams. Really ? What postage calculator were they using. Lol. I wonder if I brought 2 would they charge me $37 delivery.

thanks for everyone s help. Im not tight I just don't need to be ripped off either.

It's amazing what one finds when digging through household storage boxes. Just found this little keyring Silva that has been largely forgotten and it came with an air bubble. Don't even remember where it came from but when lined up with my "nice" compass, it matched very nicely.

That's a great little compass. I have the same one, which I put on a bit of string to for my 7yr to hang around his neck when we go hiking/rogaining. Good size for him, and as you mentioned, it's accurate. We do little stops now and again,to ask "Which direction are we walking now?" and he's very chuffed to get out his own compass and pronounce "NW" or whatever.
