Best way to get to Carnarvon Gorge Qld

Postby pgrwrx » Sun 06 Jul, 2014 4:01 pm

Friend and I are contemplating doing the multi day walk into Carnarvon Gorge in the near future. Was wondering when is the best time of year to do the walk and what is the best way to get there and back from Melbourne?

Appreciate any help that can be provided. :)

Walked the Carnarvon Great Walk in April this year with 5 others. From memory walk is closed 4-5 months over summer. In winter the nights would be VERY cold, but as a Melbournite, that might not be an issue :-), April or September would probably be ideal. There's only one road into the Gorge & even if you flew from Melbourne, would still need a vehicle from Roma (no buses etc that I know of). 2wd vehicle is fine, unless heavy rain, which would be unlikely over winter.

Getting there & when to walk......http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/carna ... about.html
Background info.....http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/carnarvon-gorge/
Great Walk Map......http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/carna ... w-topo.pdf

If your hiring a car take plenty o' fuel, food & water .....your travelling through outback Qld so long straight roads & distances are involved,
fuel/ food stops are few & far between, so fuel up when you can & take a break often, falling asleep at the wheel or micro sleeps is an issue.

Lots of extra Heavy Vehicle traffic & company 4WD activity on the Warrego Highway from Brisbane to Roma / Injune at the moment....because of
all the Coal Seam Gas infrastructure being put into place in the area. Lots of road accidents so take care if you take this route.

Oh & watch out for Roo's, Emu's & stray cattle.....Enjoy your time out there.
Mountain views are good for my soul...& getting to them is good for my waistline !

So there are no commercial operators who can take you from Roma to the Gorge and pick up at the end?
