Three season tent Mt Feathertop Federation Hut 19-20 July?

Postby David M » Sun 13 Jul, 2014 9:31 am

I was thinking of a snow walk next weekend and was wondering if it would be OK to use my three season tent at Mt Feathertop, Federation Hut camp site (19-20 July 2014)? Or should I rent a winter tent? Thanks.

If the weather looks gnarly, I wouldn't really bother going at all (unless that's your thing). If the forecast on thursday looks good (>20km/h wind, no snow, clear sky) then you'll probably be fine.

I'm only suggesting this as you'll be right next to the hut, but you'll be in greater danger if you hut bad weather somewhere on the way. I personally think feathertop can me more dangerous than bogong - and look at the past week up there....

Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

If you're walking up the Bungalow from Harrietville and camping at Fed hut you should be fine, but if you're planning on walking along the Razorback to Fed hut its a lot more exposed so a good tent would be a must, it depends on the weather and how much snow there is.
