Leaving cars at Kiandra

Postby davidmorr » Mon 21 Jul, 2014 8:24 am

I am thinking about a trip that starts and ends at Kiandra. Has anyone heard of problems for cars left a Kiandra for several days?

We were dropped off there when we did the section north of there, but there were a couple of buildings / businesses I recall in the nearby township.
Maybe you can Google street view that, get a biz name, and give them a call.
Cheers,

There is no-one lives at Kiandra now. Actually, hasn't been for probably 20 years. They restored the courthouse a few years ago, and I think they have something in there like an unmanned visitor centre. It is a ghost town. That's why I was wondering about the safety of cars.

I wouldn't leave cars at the court house at the top of the hill. But a bit further down at Pollocks Gully it is possible to get well in off the road. There are a couple of huts here. One is for hire by NP&WS so the area doesn't feel quite as exposed and open. The main track up to Tabletop goes right by here too.

Thanks kanangra. Leaving them near the possibly-inhabited places is a good idea.

I am actually heading off northeast of the road.

Hi David,

Sometimes when there is lots of snow there is not much in the way of parking other than near the Courthouse, last time I was there with lots of snow the Courthouse car park was the only car park cleared, I have left my car at the Courthouse car park for one night and for several day trips and it was OK.

Interesting, Kiandra is not even listed in GoogleMaps but the courthouse. Talking about car theft and damage in the outdoors. In the early 90s, whilst driving towards Cradle Mts, my rental car rolled off the road in a mountainous section of C138 in Tasmania. Within an hour of leaving the site for the nearest town and returning with a police officer, the car was already raided by the locals. The battery along with a few removable car parts were gone. The copper noted a guy in a beat up 4WD going in the opposite direction just a few minutes before we returned to the car to be the culprit. Amazing!
Just move it!

When we were dropped in, we stopped at some sort of coffee shop / touristy type of place.
Was actually a car photo shoot party there, with a chopper flying up and down following thickness car.
Can't really remember how far back it was but seemed close.
Cheers,

The only places I know of near Kiandra are Cabramurra, Tumut and Adaminaby, although there may be a place or two on the Kiandra side of Adaminaby. All are at least a half hour drive from Kiandra. If there is something nearer, I would be glad to know.

In early June I parked at the Mt Selwyn resort car park overnight. There is also an over night car park adjacent to the resort (outside the resort boundary). From there it's approx. 5- 7k north to Kiandra via Tabletop Mt Trail - AAWT.

Now that is a thought. Or even at Four Mile Dam campsite. Not keen on the extra distance each end, but it might work.

Thanks

Yep Selwyn is a good option, and keep in mind that the road is cleared at this time of the year so be careful parking on the side of the road at Kiandra. The ploughs rip by and can damage your car if it's parked too close.

Give the local cops at Adaminaby a ring. Im sure they'll let you know if break ins are a problem. I highly doubt it.

Ive travelled that road numerous times and always plenty of cars parked about the place either fisherman or walkers. Never seen a broken window or similar. Its too much fuel to get there for most mongrel thieves.

I've left a car at the Courthouse at least three times, for one to four nights. Also at Pollocks Gully twice for a couple of nights. Never had any problems.
