Wild dogs?

Ok that makes me feel a bit better the act that the traps nowadays are rubber coated and less likely to break bones etc. 1080 baiting in te other hand is outrageously disgusting. I understand something dramatic needs to be done to control our wild cat and dog problems but it kills so many other innocent native animals I don't see it to be justified.

A skilled dog trapper is able to set his traps with a high probablility of catching just wild dogs or foxes and by using careful trap placement, attractant scent lures and with the knowledge of how a wild dog moves and thinks trapping is the best way to target wild dogs specifically. However unfotunately PV/DEPI sees 1080 posison as a more cost-efficient alternative but obviously non-target species are very vulnerable and despite denials from Govt. regarding bi-kill from 1080 poison I would think that a significant number of meat-eating native animals and birds are killed by either taking a 1080 bait or feeding-on an animal that has been killed by one. Aerial 1080 baiting where poisoned baits are just dropped from a light plane or helicopter in likely wild dog country is even more problematic of course as these baits will never be collected unlike DEPI/PV set 1080 bait stations in the bush which are all GPS-logged and required to be collected after a certain time if not taken.

While trapping certainly places the trapped animal under a fair bit of stress at least dog traps can be set target-specific and generally only capture wild dogs and foxes while the odd wombat and possum tend not to be injured by the rubber jawed traps these days and they are released from the trap back into the bush......a task which in itself would be quite challenging as the chances of getting a good scratching or worse would be fairly high I'd think. It is a sad sight and I found the picture very confronting but don't forget that it most likely all began with the cretin that dumped a domestic dog in the bush not the trapper.

The reason why I posted the shot was the fact that this is the reality of this thread!

I'm really not sorry you were offended by this because facts are facts and DEPI have a targeted trapping program such as this in areas where complaints from others as well as bushwalkers are frequent. This unfortunate dog was a casualty under such a program. The owner would be fined if the dog was chipped... but it's the horrible reality, as are dog attacks on farming stock and people.

I have come across wild dog packs with Bull Terriers in remote regions and let me tell you it's not fun when you are alone with curious growling dogs hanging around you at dusk!

Before the gun ban I used to carry a small folding stock Remington 22 rifle on remote walks for rabbits, ducks and security. These days for solo walkers with god knows what (panthers) released into the wild, personal protection is indeed again a serious consideration.

I wasn't "offended" by your photo,just saddened , I do live in the real world,I have seen things, that even you, would be repulsed by....I stand by what I said,the photo was more important than putting the animal out of it's misery...cruel is cruel,wether it be to farm animals,protected species,or animals that have gone wild through no fault of their own......

There seems to be an explosion of feral pig numbers at the moment but yet the NP people look like they are constantly focused on the eradication of the wild dog population. Why?
The dogs clean up the piglets and are far less destructive. Leave them be I say.

My friend shot 63 wild dogs last year at Cobungra cattle Station just south of dinner plain. So theres plenty in the snow fields but most will run away from you, The bounty is currently $100 a dog.
I was up there last week And we saw some dogs on the trail cameras. Plenty of deer to.
