Red Robin Mine, north of Mt Hotham

Postby Uncle Rumple » Mon 02 Feb, 2015 7:43 am

Hello. In early March four of us are planning to walk the section of the AAWT from Mt. Hotham to the Benambra-Corryong Rd (just past Taylor's Crossing).

The first day will be a short walk from Mt Loch car park to Dibbins Hut via Derrick Hut, but I see we have the option of a detour north up Machinery Spur to look at the Red Robin Mine and then loop back to Dibbins via Cobungra Gap.

Has anyone been to this mine recently? Is there anything to see and is the detour worth the effort?

My wife and I did it a few weeks ago.

Depends on your perspective I guess.

I find stuff like that fascinating. Other consider it junk.

It is certainly worth the detour to Blairs Hut which is nearby.

There are some photos and a few words if you scroll through here:

Hope this helps.

The route up or down machinery spur from Mt Loch to Dibbin's or Blair's hut is a great hike. The mine at Red Robin Adit/mine is nothing special . I would like to trek up there in snow shoes this winter. In Summer there are leeches in the water tank next to the mine. Beware!

Thks Grant/Pika for the response. Text and photos are great and prove (if it were ever needed) that bushwalking is a whole lot more then putting one foot ahead of the other. I'll sign up to your blog. Thks also to paine-chaidal-vala.
