Firewood collection - Bunyip state forest

Heading for a quick overnighter this weekend at Bunyip state forest.

I've looked online and can't work out whether it's okay to cut or collect firewood. Can anyone advise?

Season opens again 1st Sept (tomorrow).

You just need to check the maps on the DEPI website or whatever it is they call themselves now. (Doesnt work on my mobile so cannot confirm where in Bunyip you can go atm).

Sorry - thought you were referring to roads being closed or not. Wasn't aware wood collection was seasonal (while camping as opposed to bringing home)- I went to http://www.delwp.vic.gov.au/forestry-an ... e/firewood

I thought all the campsites were basic campsites i.e. free?

Yeh sorry should have been more clear.

You used to purchase a permit to collect fire wood for private use but they scrapped that system a few years ago and now its free, just seasonal - 2 collection periods per year iirc.

Now im little confused lol, are you asking about collecting firewood for home (this was my original assumption) or did you just mean collecting fire wood for a fire while your camping overnight? There is no 'period' restrictions on collecting some fire wood for a camp fire provided your in an area that allows camp fires and your not lighting one on a TFB day. However depending where your going some places get smashed and for a little overnight camp you'd be better off just bringing some with you (buying a couple bags at a servo on the way etc).

It's just for an overnighter (taking advantage of having the little monster for a little longer for Father's day) - so not planning on taking anything home. I usually buy some food just in case regardless - thought I could collect a little extra if allowed to keep the little guy warm. I'm aware that many campsite do not permit collecting wood from the surrounding area so just being careful....

Can fire wood only be collected from the ground or can (dead) trees be cut down? A couple of months ago I was near Powelltown and a couple of people were cutting dead trees down for firewood. Surely this would be illegal?

As far as I know you can only take fallen timber, and it isn't allowed to have any lichen/moss/fungi growing on it. But you'd really have to check that with the relevant Dept. to be certain.

Its illegal to fell any trees dead or alive for firewood on public land.

Doesnt stop most people sadly, specially immedietly around campgrounds. Nothing spoils a campgound like rubbish, tree stumps and green trees hacked at with axes, hatchets or the like.

Cheers Travis. The people I saw were cutting the down trees beside the road (no where near a campground). I was going to question them about it but I was by myself and there were three or four of them and they had axes and chainsaws.
