Charlotte Pass Camping

Hi

First post. Looking for camping spots near Charlotte Pass. Doing the Main Range Walk over 2 days. Looking to camp before and after the walk as well at a camping spot close to Charlotte Pass. Any help with that and any other advice regarding the Main Range Walk, trekking near Kosciuszko and driving/parking would be appreciated.

I cant comment on camping right near Charlotte as I've always stayed in Jindy pre and post walk. As for parking you can park near the start of the walk at Charlottes, just drive to the end of the road. You'll come to a big turning circle, some car spots that are for people viewing at the lookout etc. Turn around and you can park just down from the turning circle. How busy it is will determine how close your park will be.

I assume you mean car camping? The only relatively close camp ground I know of in the NP is back down the range at Sawpit Creek, which is probably 20 to 30 minutes drive from CP. Fees/bookings apply. We camped there years ago and it was pleasant but quite busy over the Xmas holiday period. Watch out for marauding possums if you do stay there - keep all food secure. See http://www.kositreat.com.au
Otherwise +1 to what Mic said but I'd add that getting to CP very early or very late in the day is the best time to get a parking spot.

There is also camping at Island Bend on the Guthega Road which is off the road to Charlottes Pass. A bit more primitive than Sawpit Creek and possibly a fraction closer. Camping beside the Snowy, a couple of hundred metres from Charlottes Pass along the track to Blue Lake is definitely verboten.

I have just come back from doing some day walks from Charlotte Pass - I followed the suggestion of John in this discussion and stayed at kosiretreat - they had a deal 3 nights for the price of 2. I stayed in the Alpine Chalets - simple but very comfortable. Also plenty of room at this time of year for camping at the same place - they seem to be set up well for campers. Good to hear it worked out for you. Yes, my recollection is that we were well looked after as campers there. It will get very busy in a couple of weeks. The only problem we had was that it was our first experience of summer bushwalking/camping in the Snowy region - after nearly freezing on the first night we had to drive into town to buy some warm gear! I'll be down there again soon myself, staying in Jindabyne for a week after Xmas and doing day walks in the mountains.
