Tumut river suggestions?

g'day all, I've recently got my mitts on three topography maps, Talbingo, Yarrangobilly and Ravine. They seem to run the length of the Tumut river so this is where I have decided to make my Maidon voyage into the area.

Never been in the area before so has anyone got any suggested walking routes amongst these three maps?

I'm about a 20-30 klm's a day man in good walking country, happy to stay on track as will be solo and unfamiliar with the place. Not necessarily looking to stick to the river as I won't be fishing.

Could do round mtn to tumut river to happy jack reservoir and hitch back to the car

Down the fire trail from Round Mt to the Tumut is easy.
Down the Tumut to HJ Reservoir is a shade more difficult. We have gone 1/2 way, which was not too bad, but after that it gets just a bit narrow - a gorge. Definitely OFF-track.

Alternative: Round Mt, Tumut, UP river to Grey Mare FT and back. Mostly off-track too, but easier.

Sorry, meant the track on the east side of the river, on the ridge.

Wouldn't mind kayaking that section of the Tumut when the water's up a bit

Thanks for the responses guys, those places you mentioned weren't on my maps so I just did a couple of days among the Bogong peaks. It was hot, fly-blown, mozzie infested with many ups and downs ( who would've though a place with the word "peaks" in it would be so hilly?) and if you have plans of visiting Pethera hut...DONT!! It's not there, but Rings creek passes through there and it's excellent drinking/bathing water.

Yeah, we tend to avoid Kosci between mid-December and the beginning of March. The big biting March flies are terrible, and the little voracious black flies are even worse. The latter go for your temples. I remember trying to eat morning tea under/through a head-net one year, while fighting the beggars off. Bring on the cool weather! (where 'cool' is anything below zero.)

Lots of brumbies in the general area and the bities always seem to be worse where the horses are.

Thanks NNW- I was thinking that might be the case. Thinking I was last there quite a few years back in Oct/Nov. keen to take the boys for a wander and poke around the caves and gorge area.
