[Wanted Victoria] 3-4 season hammock under quilt

Postby Pack hunter » Fri 19 Jun, 2020 2:06 pm

Hi There ladies and gents,

I have a ticket to the moon hammock that I bought many years ago and was looking at using it for some hammock camping/tramping. I haven't done this style before, being a ground-dweller my whole life. Rather than taking the plunge on a brand new tier gear or similar underquilt, I was wondering if anyone would have a 3 season or 4 season underquilt- preferable pretty lightweight and down filled they'd like to part with? Most of my hiking is around the Buller and Howitt area, well below the snow line where possible and generally in the transition months of spring and autumn.

thanks in advance, look forward to seeing if anything is out there

regards

Zach

While starting off, it is common to use a sleeping mat and sleeping bag (assuming you already have them from ground-camping).

Then, if you find you like the hammocking scene, work your way up to quilts.

For inspiration, check out Shug Emery’s videos on YouTube or the (US) Hammock Forum.

I have a tttm hammock, still haven't got around to trying an overnight sleep!

I think a full zip sleeping bag (with the second foot zipper) could work to go over a hammock, foam or air mat inside.

Thanks for the replies so far, I am pretty set on getting a purpose made under quilt, having tried a sleeping mat I found getting comfortable a bit tricky... I did think about modifying one of my older sleeping bags but again, would prefer something made for the job to give this style of camping a real try up in the bush

Also try googling “Costco down throw hammock quilt” for a cheap DIY option.

I’m told the “down throws” can be a bit hard to find in Aus.

Usually available April.
Used to be branded "Double Black Diamond" ... might now be "Blue Ridge ACTIV™ packable down throw"...
