Quick review of Barocook pouch & heat pack.

Reusable Pouch (recyclable), 20g flameless heat pack (non toxic & biodegradable...obviously don't chew on it) + long spoon. Total 64g
Ultralight ! ?

The Pouch accommodates a single or double serve (freeze dried or home dehydrated). Pouch has a Zip lock top, couple of holes to let out steam & is gusseted (stands by itself). Inflates like a defensive puffer fish after initial water & heat pack reaction.

Heat packs available in packs of ten. 20g & 50g packs.
20g suitable for single serve, 50g for double serve (more water to heat up). Around $3 each. If your out walking every weekend probably a bit expensive. If your a monthly adventurer, might be worthwhile.

Burn time around 25mins.(Both sizes)

Heats food until hot... doesn't cook it.

Silent.

Doubles as hand warmer for our bushwalking friends south of the Qld border.

Stick it in your beanie to insulate in colder climes.

I went for a cooling swim in Mt Barney creek while the pouch did it's thing...

Smokey pork, beans, rice in a rich tomato based sauce. Home dehy.

They don't reveal the ingredients. This is from their FAQ:

"BAROPACK consists of 18 natural materials.
It is eco-friendly products.
Its steam comes out when water is analyzed into oxygen and hydrogen so it's non-toxic and hamless.
BAROPACK is double packaged.
Do not tear it and taste the content or use it for anything other than heating packs."

My guess is it's iron based.

Wish the heater packs were cheaper.

You could take a stab at making your own if you can find an inexpensive source of iron filings.

It's quicklime based, it's printed on the packet & on their heat pack page...& i also dropped the company a email about longer trips. They're saying a spent heat pack ingredients are ok in the environment.

I've been bringing the spent burner home anyway as I'm only out for a couple of nights at most.

Looks interesting. About 10 years ago I remember buying pre-made coffee in what looked like a regular drink can, but you pulled a tab that released quicklime which then heated the coffee. Took about 7 minutes, all self contained and no mess. Maybe not eco-friendly but it was really handy when you were on the night shift in winter. This sounds like the same process. I see it says 100 degrees C on the pack, but can it boil water?

Inside your meal packet...it will almost boil but not quite.

In the pouch itself, the reaction between the heat pad & a small amount of water produces steam, that's the 100°c printed on the outside.

So you'll still have to filter water if you think it's dodgy.

I have reused my old thin freeze dried zip locks, but the pictured silver mylar zip lock are a thicker version with gusseted bottom and are a recent separate purchase. ( Home pre-cooked & dehydrated rice is particularly pointy & sharp)
I like them because I can clean, dry, refill & reuse (you can also add a oxygen absorber, heat seal it & store dried food for months or even years).
Available in various sizes.
Roughly $1-2each depending on size. Downside...min purchase 25

I'm guessing I can seal and vacuum pack them with my Aldi sealer. Plus the pouch and heaters look like they'd pack down nicely.

Nothing if you bury it. Sprinkle it over your morning ablutions. Bring home the white casing.
Just be wary, quicklime & eyes don't mix.

The Barocook pouch is roughly 20cm x 30cm
I got the Medium size (946ml) 18cm x 20cm x 7.6cm...fits nicely.

Emailed off a couple of enquiries to local stockists to see if they can add them to their inventory. Local Amazon & eBay have run dry too

The alternative MRE pouches I've tried are too narrow, ungusseted, better suited to the narrow MRE food packs.

Saw these in action recently. Impressive how quickly they heat up a meal. Bonus points for the Turkish steam bath ambiance they give your camp.

Note they do seem to have a use by date.. we also had some older ones that lost their puff and took ages to heat up. The new ones were off like a rocket.

Does anyone know if the water heated by the pouch is drinkable?

Mine (military MRE ones) have a warning saying the heating element and its byproducts are not for consumption but I'm not sure if that just means the white bricks.

Be a nice way to get a cuppa while increasing weight efficiency/reducing water waste.

No, it's not drinkable. It's part of the chemical reaction.

Play at home 1st, you might be able to warm a cuppa as the burner lasts for roughly 25mins. Take the hot meal out halfway through the burn, replace with another ziploc with your brew inside.

Playing around...you can add 2pouches with the heater sandwiched vertically in the middle (instead of lying flat on the bottom) and heat both at the same time.

250ml beverage in one pouch.
Freeze dried/dehydrated or MRE meal in the other.
Turn the meal pouch half way through for even heating.
