WANTED: Canvas gaiters

Once an item is sold, found or thread is no longer needed we move it here. These maybe helpful for historic reasons.

Sure. Sometimes it gets too much..
(by the way, both Macpac and OP use the same fabric manufacturer in Melbourne for our canvas( although we use a organically grown/ fair trade cotton), as this mill makes the best finished canvas available anywhere. A lot is to to do with the waxes that are used in the finishing that give canvas its performance attributes)
Good design is a kind of alchemy.

Personally I have found the front closing gaiter with stiffeners at the front great for protecting shins but more than a few have stated a passion for rear closing gaiters. Please enlighten me to the merits of such a system.

Leaks are more likely through openings. Boots open at the front. If your gaiters open/close at the rear you have a solid covering both front and back, rather than two openings (and thus twice the chance of leakage) on the front.
I've also found that a rear closing gaiter can be cut differently so they fit better and cover more of the top of the boot, without compromising the ease of closure.

Um? Picky lot we are, are we not? Excuse my inability to write the formula of the respective types but at least Wikipedia provides the reason for my confusion or more accurately use of shorthand.

Polyester is a synthetic polymer

Nylon is a generic designation for a family of synthetic polymers

Sounds like a used the generic rather than specific name or at worst mucked up my family tree. Bit like calling a car a motor vehicle or at worst a flat tray a ute.

Nylons are condensation copolymers

As with other regular copolymers like polyesters

Tends to suggest that they are similar in structure. So while maybe if I said I had a glass of wine then more technically I should say I had a glass of red wine. Then again maybe the brand and year is needed if I was sourcing such a drink again

No doubt in ordering materials as a manufacturer such precision would be required but in general conversation I would have thought it minor oversight and worthy of a quick clarification. Such as "You mean polyester not nylon  "

We are all aware that companies have a choice of Gore-tex products or eVent so I wonder on the reference to PU and Gore-tex might be more marketing driven to convey a disadvantage to a rival product. Simple fact, is Gore-tex is a long established breathable system that works for me and many other people. To the best of my knowledge it is the only material I have seen gaiters made of so unless S2S are eternal optimists the product must be pretty tough for them to use it in their toughest gaiters. Maybe we might see eVent gaiters.

At least you didn't call the ute a 'pick-up'. :x

Hi Sthughes

Is that a hint for me to buy the top of the line ones and you to pay more for the base model  Beside how many pairs of gaiters does a guy/girl need

Nah I'm saving money for an eVent jacket, happy with canvas gaiters. But by all means you go for it, they would look good with your Montane "shredder" jacket ;)

Maybe someone could help me with this mildly frivolous enquiry. Years ago I saw a bloke shopping for gaiters at the Backpackers Barn, in Devoport. I seem to remember being told that a brand then available but perhaps only in small numbers went by the name of Anarchy.Has anyone ever heard of them?
Of necessity i've come to rely on Sea to Summit canvas Quagmires when i'm down in Tas. At $65, they're not cheap and the south west walking will give you 2 seasons with them, at most; but I drag my feet possibly.
It seems to me that if you walk off track in Tassie, then gaiters are going to be a recurrent cost.

Agreed vagroom. I get a few good months out of a pair in summer.
My boss is a sailor and repairs his own sails, I got him to re-stitch a pair for me a couple of months ago, and no sign of coming apart again yet! I have 2 pairs from friends im taking to him today for repairs.
Nothing to see here.

Into the Valley of Death I ride once more so forgive me if I fail to give the exact formula for the material involved.

On the weekend I friend took a pair of Australian made nylon gaiters up to Lady Lake Hut. The design was quite simple but not good but she sweated up a storm in them. Much worst than the pair of canvas ones that she had custom made in Hobart.

One Planet are back in the gaiter business by all accounts. Is anyone aware if the local shops are stocking them yet?

Cheers Brett

OOOOHHHH. Well apart from their tents, everything OP makes *&^%$#@! gold and polishes your shoes, so I'd definately be interested in trying them out. Currently got 2x mostly dead pairs of S2S and a "going-ok but in for some re-stitching" Macpacs... may have to add some OPs into the mix [edited for sanity].

Hi Ollster

Appears I am not alone with OP tents from what I have seen in the shops I am more than a bit underwhelmed by them. A fellow walker does like their "industrial" grade designed tents and would not mind seeing them made with lightweight material. Similar say to Hilleberg that make a bullet proof version and a version that you can actually carry. Though in their case the version you can carry is bullet proof and their heavy duty version is not over heavy compared to what used to be carried ten years back.

As for the OP gaiters they are a simple design that fits high on the boot with lace underfooting that could be replaced by the old standby of electrical wire. I believe that they are the original design that was dusted off and re produced as the are not that ridiculously priced any more, even made in Australia, or so I believe, but please correct me if I am wrong.

On the Backpakers Barn, not sure of the brand but Kathy direct imported from NZ a particular brand that Foresty requested so not aware if anyone else is doing the same. By all accounts they were the brand that could stand five to six days a week use in the bush but not break the corporate piggy bank.

Cheers Brett

My spelling police have truncheons and are not afraid to use them... Dunno, might go for a climb or a ride. Although Az was talking about doing a quick run up Lloyd. Weather's not looking good for anything really.
