I'd guess on the OL track somewhere?
(just based on vegetation & mountain in background, which I can't identify exactly).
This would make this a non-designated camp site tho?

Wild guess but there's something vaguely familar about it. Is it near Lake Ball Hut, on the lakeshore?

Been ages since I was there but, is it Precipitous Bluff from the southern end looking north?
then again it reminds me a bit of Mt Anne / Lake Judd too... :?

Look closely at the picture and note the size of plants, etc
This is not a really large dolerite block.

I suspect he might be in the NE - maybe West Tower?

Hmm I suspect many people from this forum have passed this crag, The track leads up to "nothing", from where you can make your own way easily to "somewhere"

And it's in the NE, im not sure what else I can say.

Are you on the track up or on Mount Arthur?
It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is much better at the top.

I like the cryptic clue but I'm not feeling confident. Is it from the Carr Villa Track below Old Bills Monument? Despite rabbiting on about it on radio, I have not walked that track. From the map I can see it just ends on the side of the road. You then have to make your own way to the ski village and/or Legges Tor. Is that where your cryptic clue originates?

Well TT although your getting the idea, Cryptic crosswords were never my thing, wasnt so much a cryptic clue rather than I didnt want to give to much away.
It's not Car Villa on Northern Ben Lomond....

Ok folks, someone's gotta nail this. The only dolerite at altitude I can think of in the NE is Ben Lomond, Ragged Jack, Tower Hill, Mt Arthur, Mt Barrow, Mt Saddleback, Mt Victoria, Mt Albert, Ben Nevis... Have I missed any?

The other track to "nothing" I thought of is on Mt Barrow where there's a nature trail that doesn't lead anywhere and a road which goes near the summit but then you have to make your own way for the last little bit. However, you look too close to the cliffs to be on the nature trail and given that you were not trying to be cryptic, I think you would have said "road" rather than "track" in your clue if you were on the side of Mt Barrow Road where it passes close to the cliffs.

I love the way 6 of us have had a crack and we're still stumped. Good one! I don't think you should give it away yet.

Hard to read him, but when he says not "Northern Ben Lomond...." it sort of suggests he is looking at one of the features on Southern Ben Lomond.
Perhaps a crag looming above the track to Stacks Bluff - which leads to a nowhere sort of saddle before heading off to the Bluff?

The "very very" has got me. Does that mean, as walking tracks go, it's virtually a superhighway or boardwalk? There are not many of them in the NE. Unless the Stacks Bluff track has had recent maintenance, I wouldn't say it's a very very good track. Also, I don't recall a bluff like that and I think the columns on all of Ben Lomond are bigger. Hence I liked the early guesses of Tower Hill and Mt Victoria.

OK - my 2 cents worth.
I think these cliffs are much smaller than they may appear - look at the close proximity of the alpine vegetation.
From memory you do pass by some small cliff lines on Mt Saddleback, so i think he is here.
I'd have to agree with TT tho, it's a good track but not very, very good -
too much time off track Mark, you'd better spend sime time in the reserve to see the definition of very, very good :D

Edit: there wasn't much to go on with this photo, could be almost anywhere (with dolerite). My guess could be completeely wrong

Hehehehe yup your completely wrong Stu.

And ok, some probably wouldnt consider it a very very good track.... BUT it is at least a SUPERPAD, if such a thing exists.

Eggs is, as always the closest of all the above guesses....
