Other Online Bushwalking Resources

Postby Son of a Beach » Fri 09 Mar, 2007 6:42 am

This topic is for links to other web sites that bushwalkers in Tasmania may find informative to compile a useful index of web resources for bushwalkers. Please include only a brief (one sentence) description of each page and the link to the page itself.

Items from this page may copied into the Other Online Resources page on the wiki for the purpose of keeping a concise and organised reference of links.

Feel free to post more links here (or in whichever other forum is suitable) for consideration for adding to the wiki topic. If you think they are particularly wiki-worthy, you may like to add them to the wiki yourself, or request that somebody else adds them for you (eg, in the Wiki forum).

John Chapman's extensive site on walking and related activities includes a lot of information specific Tasmania (he is the author of many excellent walking guide books).

Tasmanian Waterfalls is a guide to waterfalls and other natural assets in Tasmania

Dallas Stott's 'Bushwalking in Tasmania' page includes a lot of other useful bushwalking links.

My favourite links from the weather bureau site.

John Chapman's Bushwalking web site. He has links to his home page, his Tasmania section, a bit on safety including some info on tents.

He has a links page which IS WORTH A LOOK!! (sorry for shouting, but there are loads of links here, most useful).
Check the Diaries of Keith Lancaster.

Peak to Peak - a heap of links of all sorts of stuff.

The links pages from the Bushwalking Groups sites posted previously are worth a visit.

The Confederation of Bushwalking Clubs - Bushwalking in Australia

Helpful links from Melbourne Bushwalkers site. Take a look at their reference sources - this is good. Actually it is very good. Just found some stuff myself, blew me away...

This site runs some bushwalking courses.

I didn't notice this thread until now. Here's a few I've used, mostly for day-walks:

http://www.touringtasmania.info/ - Covers a lot and has a couple of walks listed you don't hear much about.

http://www.netasmania.com.au/online/db/20020129-0.html - A few walks here in the often-neglected N/E corner.

http://www.tasforestrytourism.com.au/pages/features_walks.html - Forestry Tas, has some short walks listed up to 5km in length.

I also use John Chapmans books for the South West, and his guide to Cradle and the Walls.
ken Collins book of the South West is very good too. If you enjoy geology it would be very interesting. It also shows some routes that are not marked on the usual maps so is a good resource. It is out of print but I luckily found a copy in a second hand store.

They are few have lots more but are mostly for gear, I am a bit of a gear freak.

Our Hiking Blog is a resource we have been slowly developing, centred around our walks in Tassie, Victoria and the Thorsborne Trail. We try and keep it light and a bit of fun. We have a links page that is slowly evolving. One is to this forum, where I always point anyone who asks me any questions about hiking in Tassie....

A couple of links that may be useful.

1. I'm planning to return to Tassie for a couple of weeks in early May, and hope to do a number of day walks. Not having been there at that time of year, and not yet final on which locations we will visit, I wanted some idea of average weather conditions in likely spots. This seems to do it, for example:
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_096005.shtml

2. In addition to the fact sheets and other info at Tas Parks & Wildlife already mentioned, I found this useful in identifying a lizard that I photographed at The Labyrinth when doing the Overland Track in January.

http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/wildlife/reptile/lizards.html

The snakes section is pretty good too.

Re: Other Bushwalking Web Resources

Postby johnw » Mon 16 Jun, 2008 1:18 pm

I was recently doing some family history-related research for my elderly mother, which involved looking for historical photographs. This was in NSW and I found what I wanted in the online state records archives. However, as usual, I went off on a tangent and found some interesting stuff related to bushwalking, ie locations etc.

So I got to wondering if Tasmania had similar info online, and sure enough it has. There are some quite interesting old photos available that you can search or browse. There are numerous predefined subject categories; walking tracks, waterfalls, mountains, lakes, wilderness areas etc as well as locations. You can also search by the description of the photo. They’re not necessarily categorised the way you might like. So be inventive and experiment when searching. Have fun!

Hi All,

New aerial photo resource on Tas Gov website "THELIST"

Being a regular user of "THELIST" website for my work, I noted that the Tasmanian Government 1:43,000 scale aerial photo database has been added to the layers available in their map and property searches. I was interested to find that in many walking areas, this database gives much better quality coverage than Google Earth. Although not as good as Google Earth at its best in areas such as the Melaleuca/SW Cape area, it is still good enough to identify potential routes in areas outside Google's current coverage. Try this link direct to the entire state page and then zoom in,
http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/l ... rs=268,272
or if this does not work go to the home page and use the link in the info box announcing the air photo addition, to navigate to the correct page. ENJOY!

A followup to my previous post re TheLIST website, here is a link to the page that will allow viewing of the entire state's 1:25,000 topographic maps. http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/l ... 6,27,28,30
This link will take you to the default "State" view, then you will need to click the "Manage Layers" button in the lower RH side to bring up this dialogue box -
TheListMap-1.jpg
TheListMap-1.jpg (87.7 KiB) Viewed 67224 times

Select the layer items listed in the RH column one at a time then click the < arrow button between the cloumns to remove all items. Next above the LH column, scroll down to the 3rd item "Background Imagery" and from the list of options presented, select the 3rd line again "1:25,000 Topographic Maps" and then click the black > arrow between the columns to place this selection into the active layer list so it looks like this.

TheLsitMap-2.jpg
TheLsitMap-2.jpg (82.17 KiB) Viewed 67213 times

Click "Apply", then just zoom in to the area you are interested in.

The detail is not brilliant but usable for bushwalking trip planning etc.

PS I tested the link this morning and got a server error, but once I had connected to the list home page and it had done its business checking and setting cookies, the link worked correctly, so if you can't connect direct to the link I gave above, use this link to the home page http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/listmapstart.jsp or the one Nik lists below to get your computer talking to the LIST.

When I want to use TheLIST with 1:25,000 maps, I use the following bookmarked URL:

http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/l ... p?layers=5

then type in some search criteria. Clicking on one of the search results will show it in the 1:25000 maps, from which you can zoom in/out.

Sadly the 25000:1 maps on the list are very old (eg. no Cradle Mountain to westcoast link road) - still useful but...

Hope I'm allowed to post this here... My Bushwalking Blog is a good resource for people looking for short bushwalks/day-hikes in Victoria. It's membership and ad-free and always expanding.

Cheers
Neil

EDIT: Just after hitting submit, I noticed that the URL is tasmania.bushwalk.com so very sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place! I was on bushwalk.com a minute ago so not sure how I ended up here (didn't even know there was a tasmania.bushwalk.com!). I'll leave my post here as I noticed another Victorian resource mentioned above... I trust that the mod's will delete it if need be.

The two sites are one and the same. You get a different site name depending on which URL you use. :-)

It all started off as "Bushwalk Tasmania", but when we eventually came to have more mainlanders than Tasmanians, the alternative "Bushwalk Australia" was added so that the mainlanders didn't feel like second-class citizens.

Aaah ok then... It still says Bushwalk Tasmania up the top when I'm in this thread. How confusing...

Good to hear there's plenty of mainlanders here... I was starting to think I was one of few on the mainland who was interested in bushwalking at all
