I also use John Chapmans books for the South West, and his guide to Cradle and the Walls.
ken Collins book of the South West is very good too. If you enjoy geology it would be very interesting. It also shows some routes that are not marked on the usual maps so is a good resource. It is out of print but I luckily found a copy in a second hand store.

They are few have lots more but are mostly for gear, I am a bit of a gear freak.

I was recently doing some family history-related research for my elderly mother, which involved looking for historical photographs. This was in NSW and I found what I wanted in the online state records archives. However, as usual, I went off on a tangent and found some interesting stuff related to bushwalking, ie locations etc.

So I got to wondering if Tasmania had similar info online, and sure enough it has. There are some quite interesting old photos available that you can search or browse. There are numerous predefined subject categories; walking tracks, waterfalls, mountains, lakes, wilderness areas etc as well as locations. You can also search by the description of the photo. They’re not necessarily categorised the way you might like. So be inventive and experiment when searching. Have fun!

New aerial photo resource on Tas Gov website "THELIST"

Being a regular user of "THELIST" website for my work, I noted that the Tasmanian Government 1:43,000 scale aerial photo database has been added to the layers available in their map and property searches. I was interested to find that in many walking areas, this database gives much better quality coverage than Google Earth. Although not as good as Google Earth at its best in areas such as the Melaleuca/SW Cape area, it is still good enough to identify potential routes in areas outside Google's current coverage. Try this link direct to the entire state page and then zoom in,

A followup to my previous post re TheLIST website, here is a link to the page that will allow viewing of the entire state's 1:25,000 topographic maps. http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/l ... 6,27,28,30
This link will take you to the default "State" view, then you will need to click the "Manage Layers" button in the lower RH side to bring up this dialogue box -

Select the layer items listed in the RH column one at a time then click the < arrow button between the cloumns to remove all items. Next above the LH column, scroll down to the 3rd item "Background Imagery" and from the list of options presented, select the 3rd line again "1:25,000 Topographic Maps" and then click the black > arrow between the columns to place this selection into the active layer list so it looks like this.

Click "Apply", then just zoom in to the area you are interested in.

The detail is not brilliant but usable for bushwalking trip planning etc.

PS I tested the link this morning and got a server error, but once I had connected to the list home page and it had done its business checking and setting cookies, the link worked correctly, so if you can't connect direct to the link I gave above, use this link to the home page http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/listmap/listmapstart.jsp or the one Nik lists below to get your computer talking to the LIST.

When I want to use TheLIST with 1:25,000 maps, I use the following bookmarked URL:

then type in some search criteria. Clicking on one of the search results will show it in the 1:25000 maps, from which you can zoom in/out.

Sadly the 25000:1 maps on the list are very old (eg. no Cradle Mountain to westcoast link road) - still useful but...

Garry Potter is a shuttle bus driver at Cradle Mountain offering rather cheap days tours to the area ($47!) and shuttle service from Devonport. There is also an interesting cradle moutain blog with webcam, weather alerts etc.

Good to hear there's plenty of mainlanders here... I was starting to think I was one of few on the mainland who was interested in bushwalking at all
