Carrialoo to Moollattoo

Postby LeftRightShoot » Sun 21 Apr, 2013 9:14 am

Gday,

Im wanting to investigate a potential route between Mt Carrialoo and Mt Moollattoo. I understand there are walkable passes on the NE and NW of Carrialoo however I am after a route that will get me on to the ridge to the SW of Carrialoo and on to Moollattoo.

Any one done this?

Any help appreciated.

c.

NW corner of Carrialoo is a scramble down. Bit of climbing tape may be needed by some.
(Have been told NW corner is only route off western end of Carrialoo. Rest of it looks like all cliff, but have never tried it! Who knows, there may be a small slot somewhere???)
If you came off NW corner you can contour around western end of Carialoo (heading south) to get onto saddle that links to Moollatoo.
Did Moollatoo about a year or so ago and it was very overgrown. Had trouble following the old track over it.

Mt Carrialoo - another of those things that jumps out at you from the map. Don't know about NE corner, but I lead a walk on 14/4/91 up the SE corner. Coming up from Jacks Corner Rd this was the closest. From memory it was easy. Went down the NW corner as described above. Followed base of cliff south then southeast. Can confirm no other routes. Down obvious ridge to SSE, then over Mt Moollattoo. Vegetation was also horrible then. Don't think there was a foot pad.
We encountered an old road in the second saddle (Bundanoon 2nd Ed. AMG 648,552). It disappeared into the scrub to the north below the saddle heading goodness knows where. The other (south) side of the road looked to contour off almost parallel to the top of the rising ridge heading west that we stayed on. Perhaps it joined up with the road on the map shown terminating at 632,547.

Thanks everybody,

I can confirm a successful ascent of the NORTH EAST spur. I was under the impression the gully just south of the NE spur was the correct ascent but when I saw it there was no way I was going up there. I walked down the track a few hundred meters to see if there were any obvious markings or footpads. Not quite far enough it seems... I ascended the NE spur ans I can say that I think the ascent itself might even be a little easier than the SE (correct) ascent. The problem is that once you are up top the vegetation is very frustrating. I was yelling at trees on more than one occasion. I skirted along the northern wall, up the western side of the 15m cliff line (simple) and then into the main saddle. I found an old orienteering marker on the small knoll at 665 565 (GDA94)

I found the NW pass quite easily thanks to a giant cairn. Im a cautious climber so I roped a section just after the initial descent but after that the going wasnt too bad. Time had gotten away from me so I decided to find a better way back than to make it a one way trip.

About 20m south of the NW pass cairn is a *spectacular* lookout down into Lake Yuranga framed by Moollattoo. From here a footpad heads south east to the trig. A trail continues east from the trig (theres one to the south as well but I did not investigate that one). I lost the trail just at the descent into the saddle but found it again just before the high point at 666 564 (another orienteering marker here). I was moving *much* quicker than the way up!

I lost the trail soon after the high point but about 200m later at 667 564 I saw some tape in a tree. Yippee! Followed the spur to the SE and saw more tape. This led me to the SE spur and once I saw the rope bolted on to the rocks I knew I had found the right way out. I popped out on to the main trail about 200m from where I had investigated. Sigh.

Ill have to finish this one soon.
