Another option for access to Lake Malbena may be Buggs Road to Lake Ina and Nive River ?
It DOES NOT pass through ALC land, but it appears it passes through other Titled land as well as State Forest, forestry operations.
Buggs Road is off the Lyall Highway, approximately opposite Fourteen Mile Road.

slparker - you are correct that the ALC own the freehold title to the land at "Charlies Marsh", however that freehold title DOES NOT INCLUDE the road reserve which passes through that title, all the way to the Pine River. The public have the right of passage over the road reserve.

By "Charlies Marsh" land, I am refering to the section of the land previously owned by Mr Pallin, upon which he built the Nuclear Bunker at approximately GDA 94, 456710 / 5350599.

Hi all,

Sorry to dig up an old post. I've recently taken on a desire to get out and about a bit more and came across this thread after a new-found interest in Mountain Huts sent me on a search for more info about the "bunker".

I am curious after reading through this thread whether any further information has since become available regarding access to this area and the Central Plateau Conservation Area beyond.

Was the road reserve matter resolved at all?
Is it as simple as a call to TLC and or the ALC to ask permission if I wanted to visit the bunker, if that's even an option any more?
Is someone still asking for a fee to access the area?

I don't know about a fee, but you do need to get permission from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Council to go in via Gowan Brae or any other part of trawtha makuminya.
Foot access via Roscarborough Rd is fine but be aware that there are frequently deer shooters operating in the TLC Five Rivers Reserve. Current signage does not reflect this although they are in the process of getting new signs. I assume the usual licence rules apply, which means no shooting within 100m of the road itself, although wouldn't guarantee it. Same with Buggs Rd, including the caveat about shooters although they are usually not active in the Skullbone area.
Roscarborough Rd is the shortest route and as far as I know the bunker is south of the trawtha makuminya boundary, so no sweat (apart from the shooters).

The only place I've found any sort of info about the bunker is in Greg French's book, Wild Heart of Tasmania, and the location details are a little vague.

Also note that this area is closed until the end of the month for aerial deer shooting.

Hi NNW, I I previously refered to the land where the Pallin built Nuclear Bunker is, as Charlies March - in fact that was incorrect, it is Circular Marsh. The bunker is located within the Aboriginal Land Council owned Land, ( trawtha makuminya ) - adjacent to the road reserve by several hundred metres to the west, in the forested area, not in the cleared land.
